French Socialists re-commit to Noumea Accord

2:58 pm on 2 July 2010

The French Socialists have taken note of last week's Paris talks of the signatories of the 1998 Noumea Accord on New Caledonia's autonomy.

In a statement, the party says it will pay close attention to make sure that the accord is being implemented fully.

It says it is up to the New Caledonian institutions to make a bigger effort in pushing for a development that will reduce the glaring inequalities in the territory.

The accord was co-signed by the Socialist French prime minister, Lionel Jospin.

The accord provides for a possible referendum on independence after 2014 but the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, says a consensus should be sought before then to chart the territory's future status.

It is widely believed that a vote would see a majority reject independence.
