No new election to be called in Nauru

9:49 am on 25 June 2010

Nauru's caretaker President, Marcus Stephen, says he has no intention of dissolving the current parliament, despite last week's election failing to resolve a months' long impasse.

In a statement, President Stephen says any future election should only take place after constitutional amendments to try and prevent future stalemates.

He says another poll is not the way to deal with it.

Mr Stephen says Nauru should only go the polls again once it's certain a majority will emerge, and this is dependent on increasing the number of MPs by one to 19, and having the Speaker chosen from outside the House.
