The Federal Aviation Administration is to review a new application from American Samoa to fund improvements to a domestic airport which no longer has an air service.
The Ofu airport in the Manu'a islands has been without any commercial air service since last year after locally-based Inter Island Airways cancelled all flights because of the short-run way.
The airline's new certification process bars it from operating in short-strip airports and the government has been looking for ways to extend the runway and make other improvements.
At a recent regional FAA meeting the Port Administration Matagi McMoore informed federal officials improvements to Ofu airport have been made a top priority.
