Fiji leader says honour for the Queen endures despite Commonwealth suspension

Fiji's interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, says while his administration finds the decision of the Commonwealth to expel Fiji deeply regrettable, the people of Fiji's affection for the Queen has not diminished.

Congratulating the Queen on her 84th birthday, Commodore Bainimarama says Fiji is privileged to have a long and warm association with Her Majesty dating back to her first visit to Fiji in 1953.

The Fiji Broadcasting Corporation reports him saying the Queen's reign continues to endure and reflect the close bond between Britain and Fiji that has developed over the years.

Although Fiji is a republic, it's marking her birthday with a public holiday today.
