Tahoeraa wants French Polynesia independence referendum

9:54 am on 4 June 2010

French Polynesia's anti-independence Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party says it will make a proposal in the assembly to push for a referendum on independence.

The party, which is led by Gaston Flosse, says it will lead the crusade against the type of independence which the Tavini Party of Oscar Temaru wants to impose.

It says it wants the assembly to ask the French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, officially to organise such a vote.

The Tahoeraa says the issue has poisoned the political debate for decades.

The move follows renewed calls by Mr Temaru in recent weeks for a referendum to be organised.
