Feasibility study to be carried out for proposed Solomon's hydro power station

The Permanent Secretary for Rural Electrification in Solomon Islands, Luma Darcy, says a feasibility study on the establishment of a new hydro power station should highlight any potential difficulties.

An agreement was signed last week between the government and landowners in Tina Village for the study to be carried out.

Mr Darcy says the Tina River Hydropower Development Programme aims to provide cheaper electricity and says the investigation will be thorough.

"The study will look into the feasibility of whether what power the river can afford, what are social impacts? It should cover the whole range leaving no gaps in the future that will jeopardise things. It should show if this thing happens, what will happen to the resource paths that are around."

The feasibility study is expected to be completed by November.
