Samoa ratifies Cluster Munitions Convention

11:22 am on 28 April 2010

The Samoan Cabinet has ratified the Cluster Munitions Convention which was agreed upon in Ireland in May 2008.

A statement says the ratification ensures Samoa's support for the United Nations joint movement to promote global security.

In December 2008, Samoa had signed the Convention to show support of the international movement to minimise manufacturing of dangerous weapons that are affecting people's lives, especially mothers and children.

Several powers, including the US, Russia, China, India, Pakistan and Brazil, have not signed the Convention.
