3:37 pm on 22 April 2010

The electoral commission in Samoa has set May the 14th as the date for the three by-election in the Vaisigano number one, Faleata west, and Safata territorial constituencies.

The vacancies resulted when amendments to the Electoral Act became law last month, prompting the three members of the Tautua Samoa party to step down.

The three, Lealailepule Rimoni Aiafi, Palusalue Faapo II and Va'ai Solia Papu Va'ai, plan to contest the by-election

Our correspondent Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia, says the government has also confirmed its candidates.

"For the constituency of Safata, the former chief executive officer of the ministry of the prime minister and cabinet, Auseugaefa Vaasatia Poloma Komiti, and one other candidate, who is a land surveyor, who runs his own business is Manua Lefagalala Tinokati. And the constituency of Faleata West, HRPP former executive member and former Commissioner of the Public Service, Ale Lena, and currently serving in the government and a public servant, currently still serving in the government Ulimia Petelo. Those are so far the four HRPP candidates confirmed."

The registration for candidates closes next week.
