Vanuatu government promises action over damning Coroner report

7:04 pm on 29 March 2010

The Vanuatu Government is promising it will take action following the serious allegations made against the police paramilitary unit, the Vanuatu Mobile Force.

The Coroner, Justice Nevin Dawson, was strongly critical of the VMF in a report into the death of a prisoner following his interrogation by its officers.

He recommended sweeping changes to rein in a force that considered itself above the law.

Nearly a month after the report was released the Vanuatu Government is yet to make an official comment, but the Deputy Prime Minister, Sato Kilman, says they intend outlining their response this week.

"Suffice to say that it is an important finding. It definitely has got some serious allegations in there, which the Government's intention is to ensure it addresses the issue."
