Fiji's Foreign Affairs Minister meets his NZ and Australian counterparts

7:15 am on 4 February 2010

The New Zealand Foreign Minister, Murray McCully, and his Australian counterpart have met privately with Fiji's foreign minister in Canberra.

The talks were aimed at restoring Australia and New Zealand's diplomatic ties with Fiji.

Australia relaxed its travel ban on members of the regime in Suva so that Fiji's foreign minister, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, could hold talks with Mr McCully and Stephen Smith in the Australian capital.

Mr McCully says diplomatic posts in all three countries need to be kept open.

"We need to get to a point with Fiji, where we can maintain missions, regardless of serious disagreements we have about matters of strongly held principles and that is not something that is accepted yet."
