Vanuatu planning further improvements to squatter settlements

Vanuatu is making further commitments on improving urban housing conditions in light of the growth in squatter settlements.

This comes as the United Nations is urging Pacific governments to address urban housing problems after a six month examination of city planning.

Vanuatu's local authority director, Sherol Ala, says the majority of people in Port Vila live in poor housing without electricity and sanitation.

The country is focusing on developing an urban planning policy to improve conditions, but Ms Ala says it's in its early stages.

"We have the urban policy dialogue, that's a dialogue between all local authorities, that's governments provincial governments, traditional leaders and church leaders."

Sherol Ala says it's unclear where the money is to come from long term.
