The aid agency Unicef says it expects many people to have been displaced following Fiji's first cyclone of the season.

Cyclone Mick hit the popular tourist destinations of the Yasawa and Mamanuca islands yesterday, before tracking across Fiji's main island of Viti Levu.

Tim Sutton, the deputy representative for Unicef in the Pacific, says there has been widespread flooding across Viti Levu, especially in low lying areas.

However, he says the organisation is well equipped with emergency response supplies in Fiji.

Mr Sutton says Unicef staff will be spending the day working with national authorities to assess damage and to get aid out.
