Disaster emergency operation in Samoa ends

2:04 pm on 12 December 2009

The disaster emergency operation in Samoa has been lifted after more than two months of aid work and distribution of relief supplies following the September disasters.

143 people were killed when a earthquake and tsunami hit the country on the 29th of September month.

However the reconstruction of roads and the restoring of water supply and electricity continues as well as the builing of more than 600 homes damaged during the tsunami.

The Prime Minister, Tuila'epa Sailele Malielegaoi, who is chairman of the Disaster Council on television, last night, said the lifting of the disaster emergency operation means all distribution of relief supply by the Disaster Management Officer or DMO has been completed.

But he says overseas aid will still be distributed by donors and their local agents.

He also says other relief supplies, such as clothing already under the DMO, will be kept for future disasters especially as the country is now in cyclone season.
