French Polynesia nuclear test veterans to demonstrate during French minister's visit

French Polynesia's Moruroa e Tatou nuclear test veterans organisation plans to hold a demonstration when the French defence minister, Herve Morin, visit Tahiti next week.

The group is at odds with Paris over the French plan to compensate people who suffered poor health as a result of exposure to the French weapons tests that were stopped in 1996.

The association says the fallout affected the entire territory while France maintains the exposed zone was smaller.

A bill to acknowledge a causal link between the atomic tests and cancer will be before the French assembly and Senate for a vote in the week before Christmas.

Tahitipresse reports that the minister is also due to visit Tetiaroa atoll - the site formerly owned by the late US movie star Marlon Brando.
