Precedent makes it likely that Fiji will be banned from competing in next year's Commonwealth Games

The Chief Executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation says precedent makes it likely Fiji will be banned from competing in next year's Games in New Delhi.

Fiji was suspended from the Commonwealth this month.

At a meeting in New York, the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group called for Fiji to be barred from the games unless it commits to holding an election before 2014.

The Federation's chief executive, Michael Hooper, told Morning Report Nigeria wasn't allowed to compete in 1998 while excluded from the Commonwealth, and that suggests Fiji is likely to be banned too.

"Precedent would seem to suggest that unless there are some other considerations that we are not aware of at this stage, that this is going down the same path as what happened with Nigeria."

Michael Hooper says the federation's executive board will make its recommendation at a meeting next month.
