American Samoa's Chamber of Commerce thinks ASPIRE is incomplete

The Chamber of Commerce in American Samoa says it thinks a bill now before the US House of Representatives looks to help a single tuna cannery, which is unfair to other sectors.

The territory's US Congressman, Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, introduced the American Samoa Protection of Industry, Resources and Employment bill, or ASPIRE, last week.

Faleomavaega says it aims to ensure subsidies to canneries and fishing vessels to make the territory's tuna industry viable.

But, the president of the Chamber, David Robinson says he thinks the bill is incomplete.

"T o just be singling out one cannery for assistance, where there are probably other companies in the private sector who need some sort of assistance because of this dreadful minimum wage increase we've all had to put up with. It just seems that the scope of the system should be broadened out to just more than one cannery."
