7:45 am on 3 September 2009

The paramount chief of Rewa province in Fiji, the Marama Roko Tui Dreketi, Ro Teimumu Kepa has opted not to strike an immunity deal with the State after she pleaded not guilty to incitement under the public emergency regulations.

The Director of Public Prosecution John Rabuku said the paramount chief was offered the deal in exchange for her statement about the political gathering with the Methodist Church hierarchy.

Fiji Live reports she declined the offer and pleaded not guilty.

Ro Teimumu Kepa was charged after she allegedly released a statement saying that the Burebasaga confederacy and the province of Rewa were welcoming the church members to host their annual conference in Rewa.

Her statement came after the government had cancelled the permit for the conference.

The matter has been adjourned to September 29 for a hearing date to be set.

Nine Methodist Church executives have also been charged by the police under the PER.
