The health authorities in New Caledonia say an eight-year-old girl has died of swine flu.
They say she was admitted to hospital in Noumea on Saturday and died on Monday after also contracting pneumonia.
She had been treated with anti-viral drugs for a week.
New Caledonia has had more than 350 cases of H1N1 flu so far.
