Solomons teachers strike averted

12:39 pm on 10 August 2009

The threat of a teachers strike in Solomon Islands has been lifted after talks between the government and the teachers' union last week.

Planned examinations will go ahead for standard six students on Wednesday.

The General Secretary of the Solomon Islands National Teachers Association, Johnley Hatimoana, says the threatened strike was sparked by parliamentarians paying themselves extra money in entitlements, while ignoring a cost of living salary increase promised to teachers.

"We have very seriously considered our stance and the situation that the children are in, and we have decided to let the standard six exam go ahead, while we are giving notice to the government, 14 days from now, so that they come and talk with us on the issue of the cost of living for the last 12 months."

Johnley Hatimoana says the teachers will reassess their position in two weeks and any industrial action by teachers will be voted on.
