Fiji's interim Prime Minister says the retiring president has been a driving force behind recent reforms, including the People's Charter.

Ratu Josefa Iloilo retires at the end of next month and will be replaced by the vice-president Ratu Epeli Nailatikau until a new appointment is made.

Commodore Frank Bainimarama says the retirement is a symbolic passing of the torch from a statesman who's made a great contribution to the nation and to the lives of all Fijians.

"Under his excellency Ratu Josefa Iloilo passionate and persistent leadership, the people of Fiji have come together to fully participate and contribute constructively to the People's Charter. The People's Charter initiative originated from and is an integral part of His Excellency's mandate, enabling the government to move the country forward"

Commodore Frank Bainimarama says a new president will be chosen by the Chief Justice upon the advice and nomination of the interim government.
