Small Pacific nations take a lead in greenhouse gas mitigation

Pacific nations are taking the lead in cutting greenhouse gases, with the goal of eventually shifting to 100 percent renewable energy.

Tuvalu and Niue are hoping to end their dependence on diesel with a total switch to solar and wind power - Tuvalu has given itself til 2020 to reach this goal.

Niue is having solar panel power converters installed on roofs at the Niue Power Corporation, the Niue Foou Hospital and the Niue High School.

The general manager of the Niue Power Corporation, Speedo Hetutu, says it's hoped the second engine at the power station will no longer be needed.

"Throughout the day there is one engine working 24 hours, and the second engine will come on when the load is high. The second engine, hopefully the solar grid connected, will be able to meet the demand during the peak hours. So the aim is to reduce the number of fuel burned by the diesel generators at the power station. 21 secs."

Speedo Hetutu says this will take Niue's total renewable energy to 8 percent - saving Niue about ten thousand litres of fuel a year.
