Solomon Islands lawyer charged over alleged swindle

A prominent lawyer in Solomon Islands, who is accused of swindling about a quarter of a million US dollars from his former clients, will now face court action.

43-year-old Charles Ashley was arrested in Honiara this morning and charged in relation to the misappropriation of the funds.

A spokesperson for the Solomon Islands Police, Adam Smith, says Mr Ashley will face 29 charges.

"Police executed a search warrant at his house and Law firm base in Naha. He's been charged with 27 counts of conversion under the Penal Code, one charge of money laundering under the Money Laundering and Proceeds of Crime Act and a charge of false pretences."

Adam Smith says Mr Ashley is now free on bail and is expected to appear in the Central Magistrates Court in Honiara on July the 10th.
