Fiji police reverses accountants conference ban

1:22 pm on 11 June 2009

Fiji's Institute of Chartered Accountants says the Commissioner of Police has reversed his decision to cancel their congress which starts tomorrow.

The Institute's secretary says the Police Commissioner cancelled the Accountants Congress at 9-30 this morning and then reversed the decision half an hour later.

The two-day congress can now go ahead without its first session, and will start after lunch on Friday.

Yesterday, the conference organisers said they had received a call from police threatening to withdraw the congress' licence if three speakers, lawyers Richard Naidu and Graham Leung, and academic Dr Brij Lal were allowed to appear.

They said police had also asked to see advanced copies of all speeches.
