LBJ Hospital in American Samoa stops hiring doctors

6:44 am on 27 April 2009

In American Samoa, the LBJ Hospital says it is not hiring any doctors until its financial situation improves.

The Chairman of the Hospital Authority Board, Moananu Va, says the monthly payment that LBJ is making towards the 9 million US dollar debt with the Center for Medicaid and Medicare for past over billing is hurting hospital finances.

The debt is for overbilling of the federal agency by the LBJ for four years.

The hospital has been making monthly payments of 122,000 US dollars towards the debt.

He says at present they are having to be frugal with spending without a new funding source in sight.

Mr Va says that for now they are not hiring any new doctors.

The Chairman pointed out that there have not been any reductions in medical supply orders despite the funding crunch.

The Hospital Board Chairman says they welcome the assistance of Congressman Faleomavaega in securing additional funding for the LBJ.
