Fiji's interim prime minister has been awarded an honour by the President in Suva this morning.

Commodore Frank Banimarama has been made a Companion of the Order of Fiji Military division.

Philippa Tolley was at the ceremony.

"It's now two weeks since the interim prime minister stepped aside following court decision that declared his regime illegal. The President then abrogated Fiji's constitution and reappointment Commodore Bainimarama. Now in a ceremony full of military regalia and set in the formality in government house on the hill overlooking Suva, the President has awarded the honour in recognition of eminent achievement and merit of the highest degree in service to Fiji or humanity at large. Two other senior figures, the land Force Commander Colonel Pita Driti and military law man Colonel Mohammed Aziz were merited with the Officer of Order of Fiji Awards."
