An Australian woman has died while walking the famous Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea.

A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Australia says the Victorian woman was walking with relatives and a friend when she died.

The department was not able to provide details about the cause of death, which is thought to have occurred last Friday.

The Kokoda Track, an historic 96 km trek which follows the path used by diggers in World War II, is popular with Australian tourists.

The trek can take up to 10 days and passes through mountains and steep walled valleys.
