Fighting intensifies in Indonesia's Papua region

Fighting has again intensified in Indonesia's Papua region, on the morning of legislative elections.

More than 30 Indonesian soldiers have been killed in skirmishes with separatists in the Puncak Jaya regency in the last month, and the deaths have been attributed to to Free West Papua Movement, or OPM, fighters.

A spokesperson for the West Papua National Coalition for Liberation , Paula Makabori, says at 1am this morning, local time, there was an attack on the Jayapura police precinct.

She says it is believed a petrol tank within the precinct exploded.

Paula Makabori says Indonesian security forces are now all over the Papua region, searching for activists and OPM fighters.
