French Polynesia's Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party says the opposition leader, Gaston Tong Sang, has taken his orders from Paris in trying to bring about a split between it and the pro-independence Union of Democracy.
The party, led by Gaston Flosse, says ever since Mr Tong Sang met the junior French minister in charge of overseas territories, Yves Jego, he has been lobbying for a new alliance that would exclude the Tahoeraa.
Mr Tong Sang has met the Union for Democracy leader, President Oscar Temaru, and says he expects a reshuffle this week to confirm a new majority.
No announcement has been made yet and Mr Flosse says Mr Temaru is no doubt not tricked by the manoeuvre.
The reported political realingment comes amid growing dissent within the ruling coalition which came to power two months ago, making it the third government since last year's early general election.
