Flooding has continued to affect Papua New Guinea as heavy rain in the last few weeks has caused a dozen rivers to burst their banks.

The Post Courier newspaper reports more than 30-thousand people in the Central Province have been badly affected by the flooding.

It reports the Provincial Disaster Office is taking steps to counter a food shortage and water-borne diseases.

The paper reports Provincial disaster and emergency officials toured the flooded areas over the weekend and began putting together contingency plans to deal with any problems that will arise among those affected.

Heavy rain in the last few weeks has caused the Goldie, Brown, Vanapa, Laloki, Wama, Aroa, Dilava, Omaiko, Varimana, Angabunga, Kemp Welch and Veifa rivers to flood and burst their banks.

The paper reports flood waters have affected food sources, houses and roads with traffic brought to a stand-still on Friday when mud and debris washed on Wau/Bulolo highway a metre high.
