The president of French Polynesia's assembly, Edouard Fritch, says there won't be an election for his position next week.
In an interview with the Depeche de Tahiti newspaper, Mr Fritch said he would only open a regular assembly sitting but not proceed to holding an assembly president election.
He says he has consulted lawyers in Paris and Papeete to confirm that his tenure is for a year from February 12th when he was elected to succeed Oscar Temaru.
There had been an expectation that the one-year term was from April the 9th last year when assembly officials were last selected.
The newspaper says the decision may provoke legal battles.
Mr Fritch is a senior member of the Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party, led by Gaston Flosse.
