Trial for Fiji soldier charged with murder begins

The trial for the murder of 41 year-old Tailevu man, Nimilote Verebasaga, has started.

The paper, the Fiji Times, says Presiding judge Justice Daniel Goundar swore in the five assessors for the case and told them they were to disregard anything they had heard on the case and concentrate on whatever was presented in court during the trial.

The accused, Maika Vuniwawa, who is a soldier has been charged for the murder.

He has pleaded not guilty.

The accused is represented by lawyer Haroon Ali Shah.

On January 5, 2007, Mr Verebasaga died at the military camp after being taken there from his Nakaulevu Village home, in Nakelo, Tailevu.
