The Police Commander in Papua New Guinea's Morobe Province, Superintendent Peter Guinness, says police will stay in the Wau township for as long as it is necessary following a weekend of violence which left three people dead.
Fighting broke out at the weekend when Watut tribesmen gathered in their hundreds and staged an early morning attack on the villages of the Biangai tribe.
The fight is reportedly related to an ongoing land dispute between the two tribes over ownership of the McAdam National Park.
Superintendent Guinness says the area has quietened down but remains tense.
"At the moment the two warring clans have been told to come together and in a week's time there will be a meeting held betwen the Biangai's and the Watut with the government authorities that will be the provincial administrator member for Wau Bulolo and myself the PPC and find out what is the real cause of the problem."
