The planned South Pacific Islands Network or SPIN undersea fibre optic cable is expected to be in service in 2010 opening up competition between American Samoa and Hawaii.

The Pacific Rim fibre optic cable project will link American Samoa to Hawaii in June this year.

SPIN will span the Hawaii-Australia route, with connecting cables east-to-west across the South Pacific, connecting Papeete in Tahiti; Niue; Pago Pago; Wallis; and New Caledonia's capital, Noumea.
