A Samoa Cabinet Minister says the Apia based Oceania University of Medicine, may become an alternative to the Fiji School of Medicine for medical studies by Pacific students.

The Samoa Minister of Health, Gatoloaifaana Gidlow, has told the Newsline newspaper that Samoa can offer the kind of political stability that will assure worried parents with children enrolled at the Fiji School of Medicine.

The Health Minister says the Oceania school could be opened to all students in the region for studies in the future.

She says it could help ease the doctor shortage problems in the Pacific.

Plans are underway for the school to be accredited to the University of the Philippines School of Medicine.

The Health Minister says the Philippines university was chosen because that country has similar health conditions to Samoa.
