Some Papua New Guinea workers will nearly triple their weekly take-home pay with a new minimum wage announced, and likely to take effect within a month,
The country's Minimum Wage Board has announced the first pay rise for minimum-wage workers since 1993.
Workers on the minimum wage in PNG currently earn about 14 US dollars for a 44-hour week, but the amount should rise in two stages to 38 dollars by the end of this year.
John Jeffery, the President of the PNG Employers Federation, says the size of the increase takes away 16 years of neglect of minimum wage earners.
"The minimum wage that has been determined is simply a measure of inflation since 1992. Inflation rates provided by the bank of PNG as applied to the rate established in '92, and that brought us up to the current recommended minimum wage of 100 kina 80 per week."
