11:46 am on 28 January 2009

The organisation, NZaid in Vanuatu which is funding correctional improvements in the country hopes the appointment of a new Corrections director will see further positive changes.

Mark Bebe is to be officially appointment as director of Correction Services replacing the acting director, Joshua Bong who's position was revoked because the Government's stand-in period had lapsed.

The New Zealand High Commissioner, Jeff Langley, says he knows Mr Bebe and has every confidence in his ability.

"Well Mark's a very experienced and senior public servant in Vanuatu and we've worked very closely with him in his previous role as the secretary of the Public Service Commission and we have every confident that he's going to do a great job as the director of Corrections and so we'll looking forward to working with him there."

Jeff Langley hopes Mr Bebe will be able to help push for the building of a new prison to go ahead.

He says its construction project worth more than 2 million US dollars is on-hold because the Government is still trying to prove its ownership right to the land.
