The American Samoa Chamber of Commerce is committed to cleaning up its own premises and surroundings in an effort to get rid of dengue fever carrying mosquitoes.
Chamber members recently received a presentation from health, environment and Land grant officials who are taking charge of a community effort to stop the spread of dengue.
Reports say as of last month, nearly 700 people were diagnosed with dengue in 2008.
Mark Schmaedick is an entomologist at the Land Grant programme at the American Samoa Community College.
Dr Schmaedick says the Territory has two dengue carrying mosquitoes that breed only in certain kinds of water habitats.
"The water hold habitats that we really need to focus on are things like tyres, like buckets, like these small plastic ice cream containers, tin cans, metal drums, discarded appliances, or plastic tarps, that are discarded outside, these are all key breeding sites and sources of dengue carrying mosquitoes, but these are also things everybody can do something about."
