A parliamentarian of Samoa's ruling party, Solamalemalo Keneti Sio, has called on the government to stop the weekend parole for prisoners.
He has called on the Minister of Police and Prisons, Tole'afoa Apulu Faafisi, to keep the inmates in jail until they have served their full term.
The call comes amid concern over the increase of reported crimes and the safety of hundreds of families in his constituency near the main Tafaigata prison.
Some of the crimes reported last year such as burglary and theft were committed by individuals and groups of inmates on weekend parole.
Solamalemalo Keneti has also called the justice minister, Unasa Mesi Galo, for a report on the latest programme where convicted young offenders are serving a form of home detention by staying with a church minister or a village mayor.
