NZ Maori Party launches Fiji flood appeal

12:51 pm on 20 January 2009

New Zealand's Maori Party is launching an appeal for funds for flood victims in Fiji with a 5,000 US dollar donation from the party.

Its Co-leader, Pita Sharples, says Maori are not often directly encouraged to donate to disaster funds, but the Maori Party is making a direct appeal through Maori media to its Fiji Flood Relief fund.

Other Maori organisations and iwi are also being invited to join in.

Dr Sharples says consideration will be given to how the aid is channelled because of tensions between the New Zealand and Fiji governments.
