The New Zealand government will assist Fiji with 59 000 US dollars following severe flooding there.

The flooding in western parts of the country has claimed at least six lives and about 9000 people had to be evacuated.

New Zealand's Foreign Minister, Murray McCully, says the funding will go to the Fiji Red Cross to help with water containers, tarpaulins and medical supplies.

Mr McCully says further aid will be made available according to the needs of relief agencies working with the communities affected.
