Fiji says it plans to wipe out its high rate of the lymphatic illness, Lymphatic Filariasis or Elephantitis, by 2010.

The infection, which is caused by parasitic worms, is transmitted by mosquitoes and it can cause enlargement of limbs, the genitals and breasts.

A workshop was held in the Rotuma rural hospital at the weekend to raise awareness of the disease.

An official with the National Centre for Virology and Vector Borne Diseases, Dr Eric Rafai, says the country has a high elephantitis infection rate, particularily on Rotuma.

Dr Rafai says the disease is easily treated with anti-parasitic tablets that are being distributed, but there're still too many people suffering from the infection.
