The French Polynesian president, Gaston Tong Sang, has held talks with leaders of the striking public sector unions which are opposed to the French pension reform plans being finalised in Paris.
Mr Tong Sang has reportedly been in telephone contact with the French junior minister in charge of overseas territories, Yves Jego, to explore the possibility of roundtable discussion in Paris next week.
This comes as a strike by public sector employees is in its second day to push for a one-year moratorium of the planned pension cuts.
The strikers say if Mr Jego agrees to their demand they will end their action this afternoon.
The Senate in Paris is considering a new ceiling of 18,000 euros a year as the maximum top-up retirees overseas can get in addition to the regular French pension.
France says it no longer wants to pay up to 75 percent more in pension entitlements to those who retire overseas.
Mr Jego is in New Caledonia where he was to be joined by the Tahiti-based French high commissioner, Adolphe Colrat, but the strike prevented him from leaving the territory.
