Samoa electricity supplier extends rationing

6:43 am on 7 November 2008

Samoa's only electricity provider, the Electric Power Corporation will extend power rationing for Upolu island next week as it awaits the arrival of a new diesel generator from Europe.

Power shut downs of five hours to most residential areas around the island

have caused anger and frustration to business owners and other people, who are

now calling on the management of the corporation to explain the true reasons behind the problem.

The corporation says the power outages were the result of a broken generator and low water level in dams supplying the two main hydro plants at Ta'elefaga and Lalomauga.
