The Solomon Islands foreign ministry has confirmed that the minister, William Haomae, has flown to Tehran to bolster ties with Iran.
There was no publicity of the trip which only became public knowledge when a parliamentarian mentioned the minister's departure for Iran.
The acting secretary of Foreign Affairs, Sendea Fifii, says the move by the government follows talks Mr Haomae had in New York with the Iranian Foreign Minister.
"When they meet in New York, they signed a cooperative memorandum with Iran basically allows for the two countries to explore specific cooperative arrangements."
Mr Fifii also says the government has yet to respond to the opposition's criticism of dealing with Iran.
