PNG immigration officials accused of corrupt deals

Senior Papua New Guinea immigration officials have been accused of helping illegal immigrants enter Australia.

PNG's National Intelligence Organisation says they are investigating visa scams between groups in high risk countries like Pakistan, China and Middle East who pay off local officials.

The organisation has called for greater funding and political support to tackle security issues including human trafficking and border control.

PNG's Post-Courier newspaper reports individuals are paying 5,000 dollars for a PNG visa as a stepping stone to eventually reach Australia.

Local media also reports Asian crime syndicates with local help use PNG as a destination before criminals enter Australia.

Last month, PNG officials deported 12 Sri Lankan men they believe were planning to travel to Australia on false passports.
