A request for funding to replace worn out equipment in Fiji's main hospitals has been accepted by the interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama.
The hospitals, including Lautoka and the country's main hospital, the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva, are facing a crisis with the break down of apparatus including CT scanners, X-ray machines and surgical instruments.
The Acting interim Health Minister Timoci Natuva this week tabled a paper looking for funding of just under a million US dollars and Commodore Bainimarama has now given the go ahead.
The Creative Director of the Womens Action for Change group, Peni Moore says it's the government's responsibility to prioritise health services and says the question now, is where will the money come from.
"I think there also needs to be a real commitment from the private sector to support health services as well. Six percent of our population is actually quite wealthy but they don't put anything back into the community."
