American Samoa to look at producing energy from waste

5:22 pm on 18 September 2008

American Samoa's Power Authority is actively pursing alternative energy projects to wean itself from a reliance on diesel fuel.

The ASPA chief executive officer Michael Keyser says a waste composition study will form the basis for the design and construction of an Energy-from-Waste, or EfW, facility.

Mr Keyser believes that EfW will have the most significant impact on reducing diesel consumption.

ASPA also points out that it has a competitive grant application before the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a waste heat recovery project with the canneries.

Mr Keyser says the potential benefits are huge, with cost cuts of up to 10 percent for each customer.
