Five Australians are being held by Indonesian authorities in Merauke, Papua, after entering the remote region without proper travel documents.

Indonesia's Antara news agency reports that Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed the group of five arrived in Merauke aboard a small plane on Friday.

The three men and two women are under the supervision of the Indonesian authorities pending the issuance of the permits.

The Australian embassy in Jakarta has given consular assistance to the five who arrived in Papua from the Horn island off Cape York, which is an hour flight away.
