Unofficial results in Vanuatu's election should be available today, after counting continued well into the night.
The country voted yesterday to elect 52 members of parliament to represent 17 constituencies.
A public holiday was declared, to encourage voting, and a country-wide liquor ban was in place.
Megan Whelan is in Port Vila.
"There were large queues at a number of polling stations in the morning, but, by the afternoon most people were able to vote straight away. Some polling stations remained open after the official closing, 4.30, because of a late start, problems during the day, or people still waiting to cast their votes at the end of the day. By 11:30 PM, some of the bigger polling places in Port Vila had only counted half their ballot papers. The electoral office says there were only minor incidences during the day. It will be at least a week before official results are released."
