Threat of suspension of Fiji from Forum called wrong and unworkable

5:38 pm on 1 September 2008

A former diplomat in the Pacific says the Forum leaders are wrong to threaten Fiji with suspension from the regional body.

The Pacnews Agency reports the man, who is unable to be named, believes suspension was never the intention of the Forum's Biketawa Declaration.

He says suspension is a new extreme definition of targeted measures, and is against the spirit of the Declaration, which is based on the Pacific Way.

The man also says such a move would be impractical and would cost the region in economic and other terms.

And the former diplomat says it would apply serious brakes to the collective efforts at regionalism, regional economic integration, and the Pacific Plan
